In the coming days, MLAs will vote on Bill 108, An Act to Amend the Electric Power Act. This bill will change the way we regulate our energy utilities to ensure that our provincial emissions reductions, the integration of renewable energy, and cost-effectiveness take top priority.

The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission is accepting public comments on Maritime Electric’s proposed $371 million diesel combustion turbine until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10.

We have lots of great opportunities to volunteer with Energy Democracy Now! coming up. Help us reach new folks at our next community event, find new connections in different parts of the province, or help keep your representative informed on energy issues.
Volunteer option descriptions:
Tabling: Tabling means serving as a friendly representative for Energy Democracy Now! Co-operative at upcoming community events. You’ll explain our mission, encourage people to sign up for our newsletter, and give out pamphlets and other materials. Tabling is low-stakes, and the person-to-person connections that we make help make the movement stronger than any online post ever could.
Contacting/Meeting with your MLA or Mayor: We want to make sure our representatives have responsible energy planning and climate action top of mind. Concerns coming directly from a constituent are the most effective way to get attention on important issues like climate and affordability. Energy Democracy Now! and our collaborators have been hard at work preparing plain-language documents and evidence on the importance of up-to-date energy legislation. Now it’s time to get it into the hands of decision-makers. You don’t need to be an expert to be taken seriously by your MLA. Explaining why you care about an issue can go a long way, and we can help ensure you are prepared to answer any questions comfortably.

Petition to the PEI Legislature
Please help collect signatures for Energy Democracy Now! Co-operative’s petition to the Legislative Assembly.
The petition calls on Government
- To make the necessary legislative changes to allow liberalisation of PEI’s electricity grid, and
- To do everything possible within its jurisdiction to resist Maritime Electric’s diesel-fuelled proposal that is currently before IRAC.
The Legislative Assembly rules require that a petition must be submitted on paper (not electronic) using a specific format that we have followed. Please note that there must be no marks from erasing, inserting, or crossing out parts of the petition.
The main Cover page and Extra pages can be downloaded and printed for anyone who wants to collect signatures. For a simple start, ask the people you already know: Friends, family, relatives, neighbours, people from church, hobby groups, sports classes/teams, community organizations, and more.
You can add as many Extra pages as you need to the main Cover page. Instructions to deliver signed pages are at the bottom of each page.
Kindly ensure that signers complete all sections in full. Failure to do so nullifies the signature.

Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC)
Maritime Electric wants to build fossil-fuel engines on Prince Edward Island. This plan would lock us into decades of carbon emissions, volatile fuel prices, and higher costs for rate-payers, all while undermining the province’s Net Zero 2040 commitments.
Prince Edward Island can do better. Wind and solar energy production in combination with battery storage and smart meters are becoming the new standard. We can build a clean, reliable, community-driven energy system that keeps power affordable and puts Island residents first.
We call on the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) to reject Maritime Electric’s fossil-fuel application for On-Island Capacity (UE20742) and instead require a transparent review of renewable, cooperative, and future-proof alternatives.

Re: Maritime Electric Security of Supply Proposal (Docket UE20742)
Dear Commissioners:
As a resident of Prince Edward Island, I am writing to express my concern about Maritime Electric’s proposal to build fossil fuel Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE). While I agree that PEI needs reliable on Island electricity, I do not believe this proposal represents the best long term solution for Islanders.
By committing to fossil-fuel RICE engines, MECL is exposing Islanders to:
* Volatile fuel costs,
* Rising carbon pricing, and
* The likelihood that renewable alternatives will be cheaper over the project’s lifespan.
Without a robust comparative analysis, ratepayers may end up bearing higher long-term costs.
For these reasons, I respectfully urge IRAC to:
1. Require MECL to conduct and file a full alternatives analysis, including renewables-first and community/cooperative models.
2. Ensure that the Net Zero 2040 framework is a binding reference point in assessing any new on-Island generation.
3. Provide for open and transparent hearings rather than relying solely on negotiated settlements that could narrow the range of solutions.
Islanders deserve a power system that is reliable, affordable, and consistent with climate goals. A hasty commitment to fossil-fuel-based RICE generation risks undermining that vision.
Please reject this application that locks us into fossil fuels and instead support solutions that strengthen renewables and community energy.
